Maurits Cornelis Escher - Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) - Dutch graphic artist. Born June 17, 1898 in Leeuwarden (The Netherlands) in a family of hydraulic engineer. In 1919 he entered the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem, but soon left for training architecture graphics. Until 1937 he traveled in Europe, sketched, paying special attention to the deceptive, ambiguous elements of the landscape.

Escher's works involve the viewer in opposition of illusion and reality. For example, in the engraving Reptiles flat image lizards miraculously appear three dimensional, they seem to crawl out of the picture.
